Building Opportunities Through Technology: Preparing Students for the Future

For more than a year, one question kept coming back to me: How could we better prepare our high school students for the future? The answer always led back to technology.

At ACCAI, we have always believed that education goes far beyond helping students pass their classes. Our goal is to equip them with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills they need to succeed in college, the workplace, and life.

As we watched our students grow, one concern became increasingly clear. Many of them were approaching graduation without having the opportunity to develop basic computer skills. To better understand the situation, we surveyed our families and discovered that approximately 75% of ACCAI households did not have a computer at home.

The results confirmed what we had already begun to see in our classrooms:

Digital literacy is no longer optional—it is essential.

A Community Project That Started Something Bigger

Earlier this year, an unexpected opportunity helped turn this dream into action.

Jake Collins, a high school student, contacted us with an inspiring idea. As part of a school project, he wanted to raise funds to purchase computer components and build computers alongside ACCAI students. Thanks to Jake's initiative and the incredible support of his parents and the community, the project became a reality.

Eight ACCAI students participated in two workshops where they assembled four desktop computers piece by piece. For many of them, it was the first time they had ever seen what was inside a computer or understood how all the components worked together.

The workshops were about far more than building computers. They sparked curiosity, confidence, teamwork, and the realization that technology is something they can learn, create with, and use to shape their future—not something to fear.

Those computers became the foundation of something much bigger.

From Computers to Digital Skills

While the computers gave students access to technology, we knew they also needed structured instruction.

Thanks to Denise, who secured the funding needed to launch the program, that next step became possible.

On August 1, 2026, ACCAI officially launched its Technology Program for 21 high school students.

The program provides practical skills that students will use throughout high school, college, and beyond, including:

Microsoft Office
APA formatting for academic work
Responsible use of Artificial Intelligence as a learning tool

During the very first class, we quickly realized how necessary this program truly is. Some students had never connected a computer to a monitor or used basic keyboard functions.

Moments like these reminded us that many young people are not lacking ability—they simply have not had access to opportunities.

Coming Full Circle

Perhaps the most meaningful part of this story is our instructor.

Ian Acosta joined ACCAI during our very first year in 2023. Today, he is preparing to graduate with a degree in Electronic Engineering and has already become a successful young entrepreneur.

Watching Ian return to ACCAI—not as a student, but as the teacher leading this new program—is a powerful reminder of what education can accomplish.

His journey represents exactly what we hope for every young person who comes through ACCAI—not only to benefit from opportunities, but one day to create them for others.

Technology Is Only the Beginning

The launch of our Technology Program marks an exciting new milestone for ACCAI, but it is only one part of our mission.

Today, ACCAI serves more than 80 students, providing educational opportunities that strengthen academic achievement, language development, digital literacy, creativity, and personal growth.

Together, these programs provide students with the academic support, practical life skills, and opportunities they need to build a brighter future.

Today, ACCAI continues to support more than 80 children and young adults through academic support, English classes, early childhood education, reading and creativity programs, community initiatives, and technology education. Each program exists because our community believes that education has the power to transform lives and create opportunities for future generations.
